The Toronto Rush welcomed more than 500 young ultimate players and their families to Varsity Stadium on Friday night for the team’s annual School Night game, creating an electric atmosphere as the Rush took on the DC Breeze in a critical Eastern Division matchup.
Thanks to the support of the Rush’s corporate partners, ultimate teams from more than 30 schools across the Greater Toronto Area were in attendance, filling the stands with energy, enthusiasm, and plenty of noise throughout the evening.
On the field, conditions proved challenging from the opening pull. Strong winds swirled throughout Varsity Stadium all night, making even the most basic throws difficult for both teams. Ironically, it was the visiting DC Breeze who ultimately handled the blustery conditions best, earning a 23-18 victory.
The Rush won the “battle of the drops” to build a 7-4 lead after the opening quarter. The momentum shifted in the second quarter, however, as the Breeze settled into the game and began finding answers against the Rush defense. DC controlled much of the quarter, outscoring Toronto 6-2 to erase the deficit and take a narrow 10-9 lead into halftime.
The second half remained competitive, but the Breeze began to limit their unforced errors and created separation. The visitors ultimately pulled away late to secure the 23-18 win.
While the result was not what the Rush were hoping for, the atmosphere created by the hundreds of student-athletes in attendance made for a memorable evening at Varsity Stadium. Their passion and support helped showcase the continued growth of ultimate across the GTA and reinforced the strong connection between the Rush and the local ultimate community.
